Ork Shanty Town: Cactus Groves

Made some Borderlands-inspired alien cacti patches for my Ork Shantytown last month and just this past weekend got around to putting the last coats of paint on them. The tall cacti are made from wooden dowels of various diameters and lengths glued into insulation foam which is mounted on old CDs. Once dry, I took a high-temp glue gun and covered them with glue, letting it flow vertically down each "trunk". The smaller "bush" cacti are made from seedpods of the Sweet Gum tree and my tutorial on how to make them is here.

Adepticon 2010 In Pictures

Whew! What a long weekend! Well, with Adepticon 2010 (and all its hard work, preparation, and extreme fun) behind me, I can finally update EoG a little more regularly.

This year's Adepticon appeared to be the largest yet and, in terms of attendance, it truly was. I'm extremely happy that this convention has broken away from the 100% Games Workshop mold and gone into new territory. This year saw the inclusion of Privateer Press' Warmachine and Flames Of War as a major attraction in the Main Hall, with several smaller systems in the Open Gaming division. Rumours are swirling about that next year may even see the addition of Corvus Belli's Infiniti, amongst others.

As always, thanks to everyone on the Adepticon staff and all the volunteers for making this awesome convention possible. Even with my small glimpse behind the scenes of the Open Gaming division, this con takes a lot of hard work and dedication on the part of many, many people.

Thanks also to all the attendees! Every game I was able to play in had some great opponents who really gave me a run for my money. I played in the 40K Combat Patrol tournament Saturday and my first 2 games were major victories, while my final game was a major loss! Ah well, karma is a fickle mistress. I was also able to get into the LOTOW bring and battle Saturday night which was a rip-roarin' good time, pardner! I had a lot of fun shooting indiscriminantly into every fist fight I could...

I FINALLY finished assembling and painting my Kommandoz mob. It seemed like that took forever. The Tankbustaz are last minute additions to the mob that I threw together before priming - I actually really like the guy with the shoulder launcher. He looks like he's ready for anything! Enjoy!

Dalek-inspired LED Big Med Stompa

"EKS-TER-MIN-ATE!!!"

My Dalek-inspired LED Mek Stompa's finally complete...I may re-do the head in the future to be more Dalek-like (basing it off the actual GW model's head), but would only do so if I work on another Stompa that I could transfer the current head too. This Stompa is about 70% scratchbuilt and 20% GW, with the remainder being comprised of a Tamiya KV2 tank kit.

Tutorial: The $15 or less Display Board

Materials Needed:

-An old painting of suitable size to accommodate your army, preferably lacking the matte board framing and not on a stretched canvas
-Staple Gun with heavy-duty staples
-Basing materials (sand, gravel, static grass, bitz, etc.)
-White/PVA glue
-Spray Primer & Sealer
-Paints


1. Acquire an old painting. It should be large enough to easily accommodate all the minis in your army (The painting I chose was about 3'x2', large enough to hold 1750pts of mechanized Orks, with a little room left over for dice and objective markers). DO NOT use a stretched canvas painting - it will not be able to bear the weight of your minis.

2. Pop the painting out of the frame, flip it over, and return it to the frame.

3. Place the painting on a level, secure surface. Using your staple gun (I spent $4 on mine about 4 years ago), staple the painting into the frame - either by stapling directly down into the painting's edges (where the frame overlaps) and/or stapling into the side of the frame.


4. Make sure the painting is secure. If there is any give, put more staples in.

5. Flip the painting over. Spread out the glue and cover with your basing material (I recommend a light coating of natural sand. I use sand from a local beach that's been sifted to get out any cigarette butts or used needles. Cost: $0). Let dry for an hour or so.

6. Seal your basing material with the spray sealer (Cost: ~$3) and let dry for the recommended time.

7. Prime your display board with the spray primer (Cost: ~$3) and let dry.

8. Basecoat your basing material. Once dry, highlight with one (preferably 2 or more) lighter shades.

9. Mask off and cover your basing material. Spray paint the frame your desired color (I used Walmart "Fire Red" paint. Cost $0.98). Once dry, add any details to the frame.

10. Remove the mask and your display board is complete.

Total assembly time: 2 hours
